The Civil Aviation Authority is the regulatory arm of our organisation and the Aviation Security Service is the nationwide provider for aviation security.
Aviation Security Officers, Queenstown Airport We are looking for people who enjoy working in a dynamic, physical and varied role, for our next intake commencing on 24 July 2023. You will be a strong communicator, who is able to connect confidently with people from all walks of life. You will need to be a problem solver, have good situational awareness, and an excellent ability to manage your time. We work a six and three shift pattern (three early shifts, followed by three late shifts and three days off) seven days a week, which can provide opportunities to pursue personal interests at varying times of the day.
We will support you as you train for the NZQA Level 4 Certificate in Airport Operations (Aviation Security), which is both classroom-based as well as on-the-job in our operation. Part of the classroom component will require you to attend a three week course in either Christchurch or Auckland (Monday 4 September to Friday 22 September 2023), so you will need to consider this when deciding to apply. Following your basic training, there are ongoing opportunities for further development and career progression.
As a fully competent Aviation Security Officer, your key responsibilities will include:
- Security screening departing passengers and their baggage; * Perform mobile, foot and static patrols in and around the airport; * Hazard inspections of runways and other operational areas including navigational installations; * Liaise with other airport agencies and stakeholders. About us

We offer excellent training, 28 days of annual leave per annum, life insurance package, wellbeing benefits, free parking, full uniform, shoes and a competitive starting rate of $70,084 per annum, increasing after six months once certified.
To be considered for a career with AvSec, you must meet the following pre-requisites:
- New Zealand/Australian citizenship or New Zealand residency. * Willing to comply with all required Health and Safety procedures. * Medically and physically fit and willing to undertake a medical assessment by a licensed practitioner. * Able to work a shift pattern of 6 days on and 3 days off - with early starts and late finishes. * Possess a full clean New Zealand driver's licence (or be in the process of gaining this). Due to the requirements of the role those with colour vision deficiencies, recent serious injuries or criminal convictions will not be considered.
Important information
To be considered for the 24 July 2023 intake, you must be available to attend an evening Assessment Centre in person, as well as a daytime face-to-face interview in Queenstown, during the weeks commencing Monday 29 May and 5 June 2023 respectively. If you're unavailable for these, we will have regular intakes over the next few months and we would welcome your application then.
Queenstown is currently experiencing a significant shortage of available rental accommodation options. If you are applying from outside of the Queenstown Lakes area, you will be asked in your application to confirm that you have accommodation within reasonable commuting distance of the airport.
